Paradox Films with agency, Mortimer Harvey, are producing a series of TV commercials for Koo called “What’s Kooking in my kitchen”. The commercials have a very real feel to them as we shoot in the kitchens of everyday South Africans preparing their own special recipe for their families. Director Stephen Paterson makes the performance priority, looking for those moments where the cook has forgotten that they are on camera and get completely caught up in the act of preparing that special meal.
We shoot on 2 Panasonic P2 HD Varicam cameras as well as the HCK10 minicam. The P2 cameras are ideal for this production as they deliver 1920×1080 resolution in AVC INTRA 100 codec and the 2/3inch CCD imagers gives just the right amount of depth of field to enable us to shoot unrehearsed and have it in focus. Big sensor cameras are DEFINITELY not at home in this environment!
Both camera operators can see each others images on LCD monitors to make sure we are not shooting the same thing, which would be a disaster for the editor. Lighting is done with a mix of KinoFlo and LED fixtures to keep the set uncluttered and keep the heat to a minimum. Our lighting crew, under the command of our Gaffer – Malcolm Stone, do a great job managing to light beautifully in the tightest spaces!
Our cameramen, Willem Viljoen, Marius Potgieter and Sound Recordist, Kevin Bird, have worked together for so long that the process happens without much discussion.
Much thanks go to the editor, Neil Gow from Glasshouse for his patience and professional approach.
