Every Director of Photography loves shooting TV commercials for beauty products. We know that this is our opportunity to create beautiful images. All the elements are there for us to do just that, beautiful girls, all the gear we could wish for, and our preferred crew. Lighting and art department are our greatest allies in this situation, their talent contributes enormously to the success of such a project. Production is also prepared to go the whole way with this in post, spending more of the precious budget on grading.
We had some of the top talent in the country in front of the lens on the Clere/Satiskin commercial, amongst them our Miss SA princess, Thuli Sangweni. She is not only beautiful but a pleasure to work with. One of the scenes takes place on a rooftop garden and as it is with shoots, we shot on the coldest night of the winter of 2012! The crew looked like an Antarctic expedition that got lost, while the cast had to put on a brave face in the smallest summer dresses. We did our best to keep them warm, but I applaud every single one of them for the way in which they managed to look warm when the camera was rolling.
Thanks to our production team for all the warming up measures! The warm soup was especially welcome. Also a special thanks to Alice Rowe for her beautiful art direction, and the lighting team under Malcolm Stone for the magic they created.
The one person who very seldom gets thanks for the important part they play is the most important person! Stephen Paterson, our Director, who always keeps true to his vision and keeps the team pulling in the same direction. Thank you!
